At Skyline, we take your health and well-being seriously, and that extends to how we care for the environment. Our commitment to preserving the environment is always expanding. LivingSmart® is how we put that commitment into action every day – Earth Day included.
The LivingSmart program is made up of five specific areas of advancement: EnergySmart™, HealthSmart®, EarthSmart®, WaterSmart® and HomeSmart®. Each element of the program is designed to help save you money, while conserving resources and treating our planet with respect.
1. EnergySmart Technologies Help Shrink Energy Consumption and Utility Bills
Your new home includes small steps with big impact — like using dimmer switches, motion detectors, fluorescent or LED lighting and programmable thermostats to help reduce your electrical usage. We also feature energy-efficient heating systems and tankless water heaters, as well as refrigerators, dishwashers and dryers that are certified under the EPA’s ENERGY STAR® program to save energy without compromising performance. Even our exterior building materials help out. We use radiant barrier roof sheathing to reflect the sun’s heat, weather stripping to help keep indoor temperatures more consistent and low-E glass windows to improve their thermal efficiency.
2. HealthSmart Features and Finishes Help Improve the Indoor Air Quality of Your Home
At Skyline, we use low-VOC (volatile organic compound) interior paint, as well as water-based wood finishes, caulking and adhesives to ensure a healthier living environment for you and your family. A sealed combustion furnace and central vacuum system help keep indoor air quality at healthy levels. We use properly-sized HVAC filters to ensure maximum efficiency while keeping airborne particulates out of your home. And, we install quiet bathroom fans with built-in humidistats that save energy by automatically turning off when the humidity level has dropped.
3. EarthSmart Materials and Eco-Friendly Options Help Conserve Natural Resources
We incorporate engineered wood products that resist warping, splitting and shrinking while helping to preserve our forests. We do our part to recycle, putting unused materials back to work and creating great products like our plush, stain-resistant carpeting. We also incorporate features like a built-in kitchen recycling bin, an optional solar panel system and an electric vehicle charging system to help keep your home earth-friendly.
4. WaterSmart Features Help Conserve Water and Save You Money
The kitchen and bathrooms in your new home incorporate faucets, showerheads and toilets that are certified to meet the EPA’s WaterSense program criteria for water efficiency and performance. Your tankless water heater includes a recirculating pump that keeps your hot water continuous, so you never have to worry about running out again. And, the landscaping surrounding your home showcases drought-tolerant plants, materials and techniques that respect California’s climate. (In fact, the entire Skyline land plan uses a water-efficient irrigation system that’s above and beyond what most master-planned communities use, as well as reintroducing locally sourced native plants.)
5. HomeSmart Technology Helps You Stay Comfortable, Connected and in Control of Your Home Our advanced technology lets you control your home’s temperature, lighting and much more from your smartphone or tablet, wherever you are. It’s a great way to save energy while ensuring your comfort. You can also remotely monitor who’s coming and going using your smart device. And, to keep you connected at home, we use a mesh Wi-Fi system that can travel down hallways and around walls, so you have a strong signal in every room.
