Summer is here, and you know what that means. Fun in the sun, lazy pool days and backyard cookouts with friends and family. Looking for ways to throw a fun summer party that goes beyond the typical barbecue? Check out these four summer-themed party ideas.

Luau
Say aloha to summer with a luau-themed party. To bring the island vibes to your home or backyard, start with skewered appetizers, small bites and fruits that are easy to walk around with. Then add in signature tropical drinks, such as Mai Tais, Blue Hawaiis and piña coladas. For a tasty non-alcoholic drink, combine ice, rainbow sherbet and lemon-lime soda in a punch bowl. If your party is indoors, have some island-themed movies like “Blue Hawaii,” “South Pacific” and “Blue Crush” playing on the TV.

The Lookout, Skyline’s vacation-style amenity center, is a great spot for a luau, with a sparkling pool, stately palm trees and sweeping vistas of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Don’t forget the aloha shirts!

Summer Camp Party
Whether you loved going to summer camp or have never been, this theme is great for adults and kids alike. To create a rustic setting, get creative with pinecone centerpieces, log-like drink coasters and plaid napkins. For the menu, think things that could (have been) cooked over a campfire. Take hotdogs to the next level by wrapping them in a crescent roll, and s’mores are a must. A make-your-own trail mix station is also great for snacking, and doubles as a take-home party favor.

Speaking of trails, if you’re hosting your summer camp party at Skyline, why not take your guests on a quick hike along the community trails? Skyline is surrounded by 1,600 acres of natural open space just waiting to be explored.

And if you’re the host or hostess, aka the camp counselor, be sure to wear a whistle so everyone knows you’re in charge!

Ice Cream Social
There’s no better way to beat the summer heat than with an ice cream social, complete with DIY sundae and float bars. For décor, go for rainbow colors and polka dots, or pastels with gold accents. Place ice cream containers in tin buckets filled with ice. Encourage your guests to make their own sundaes with different flavors of ice cream and toppings, such as rainbow sprinkles, almonds, chocolate and caramel syrup, cherries and whipped cream. For floats, set out vanilla ice cream with root beer, orange soda or any other beverage you’d like to float some ice cream in. Don’t forget to have a sorbet or lactose-free ice cream option – your lactose-intolerant friends will thank you.

The homes at Skyline make hosting an ice cream social a breeze, with spacious gourmet kitchens and islands that were made for gathering around, and indoor/outdoor living spaces that keep everyone connected whether you’re inside or out.

Beer Tasting and Potluck
Nothing says summer like a cold beer, good friends and a potluck. To make things more fun and ensure a variety of brews at your tasting, this one requires a little prep work. Ask your guests to each bring their favorite craft beer and keep track of who’s bringing what to avoid overlapping. Make sure all flavor profiles are represented and fill in any that may be missing: crisp and clean; hoppy and bitter; malty and sweet; dark and roast-y; smoky; fruity; and sour, tart and funky. Give your guests score cards so they can write down their favorites.

Feeling a little heavy after all those tastings? Get a little exercise, burn some calories and take the party on a walk to The Lookout, where everyone can relax in the indoor/outdoor lounge areas or sit around the firepit and share their favorite beers.
